I have spent the last 6 pages arguing the our Supreme Court is busily disassembling our Constitution, to the benefit of Trump and themselves, and to the detriment of all the rest of us. That's all very well, but if there is nothing we can do about it, why get all worked up? I am all worked up, and trying to get you worked up as well BECAUSE there IS something that can be done about it. It is called impeachment. The black text on the screen is the exact words of the Constitution. In simple language what it says is that Impeachment is the way to remove ANY civil officer while in office. The way to do it is for the House of Representatives to pass a bill impeaching an official. It is just like any other bill except that instead of making a law, its aim is to remove an out of control official. Like any other bill the impeachment takes only a majority to pass. If it passes, it is called an impeachment. The impeachment is only the first step in the process. It brings the charges as it were to the Senate for a trial. This is NOT a judicial trial, but a political one. Meaning the Senate is in charge, not a judge. If 2/3 of the Senate present agrees, then it is called a Conviction, and the penalty is removal from office and removal of qualifications to ever serve any federal position for life.
Now the really interesting part of this is the answer to the question of what has to be proven in order to get a conviction. The answer is Treason, Bribery, or any other high crime or misdemeanor. This is pretty much anything. If 2/3 of the Senate agrees that the charge deserves removal from office, then there is not much in the Constitution standing in their way. It is the 2/3 that is the hurdle.
And by the way, judges can be impeached.
What Now?
Article II Section 4
The President, Vice President and all civil Officers of the
United States, shall be removed from Office on
Impeachment for, and Conviction of, Treason, Bribery,
or other high Crimes and Misdemeanors.
A Misdemeanor is enough if 2/3 of the Senate says so!
Federal Judges CAN BE impeached. Claiborne 1986
