I am still trying to convince you that our Constitution is worth protecting. No reasonable attempt at that goal can ignore the Bill of Rights. The Bill of Rights was not a part of the original Constitution as signed. Its history tells a lot about how important it is.
The revolutionary war was won in September of 1783. Within 4 years, the 13 victorious colonies had written the Constitution for the United States. They had had practice. Before the war had even started, the colonies had for the most part already written their own Constitutions. Most of them had Bills of Rights. When our Constitution was proposed without a Bill of Rights, it was a no-starter. The colonists knew from personal experience what it meant to be occupied by a foreign nation. They knew what it meant to have foreign soldiers living in your home, foreign soldiers patrolling your streets, foreign soldiers able to arrest you at any time for any reason, or no reason at all, with you having no rights to fall back on.
Our Bill of Rights was written by people who had been there, and knew what it meant to live in a society without these rights. Much of the world lives today without these rights. Fascist forces within our own country would take away these rights. They already have for non-citizens, and for a goodly number of citizens swept up in the hate.
We will come back and take a long look at this list together when we review the actual words, piece by piece. But right now, let me give you just a quick overview.
Freedom of Religion means the government can not establish a religion, it can not discriminate against a religion, and it can not outlaw a religion. If you are anything but Christian, this means a lot to you, and even if you are a Christian, how would you like the government telling you what that officially meant?
Freedom of Speech means you can publicly criticize the government and they can not take action against you as a result.
Probable Cause is technical lingo for Right to Privacy. You have a right to expect reasonable privacy. That means the cop can not search your car at a stop light just because you both happen to be there. Same with searching your house. They have to go to a judge, explain what reason they have to suspect something illegal is going on, and IF they convince a judge, they can get a warrant to search your house. Otherwise not.
No self incrimination means you have a right to remain silent in any trial at which you are the defendant.
Impartial jury means that any jury that is going to try you will be from your neighbors, and you have the right to screen them for any pre-bias against you.
Due Process is HUGE, HUGE, HUGE. It is what migrants are being deprived of NOW. It means you must be given notice that you are going to be arrested. You must be given time to get an attorney, and you must be given a hearing BEFORE you are convicted.
I am not covering the rest, not because they are not important, but because this is just an introduction to the subject. Hopefully, you have gotten the point. You do not EVER, want to live in a country where you do not have these protections.
If you have taken all these for granted all your life, don't! You have them because of your Constitution.
